6 Month Apprenticeship Update – Jack Hogarth, Trainee Underwriter

I am currently in the first year of the Apprenticeship Scheme at Clegg Gifford. I work within the administration team on the Retail side of the business. On the retail side we deal directly with customers who have Motor Trade, Homefleet or Taxi policies. My role with the admin team is to process and quote any mid-term adjustments that our customers may need, like adding / removing drivers, changing indemnity limits or even accounting for convictions. I progressed into this role around 1-2 months into the Apprenticeship scheme after an initial training period where I was introduced to our insurance products and the systems we utilise.

As a school leaver, Clegg Gifford’s Apprenticeship scheme appealed to me as it is a family run business with an ambitious mindset. They had set our clear avenues for apprentices to progress in their roles and ensured we work towards our Chartered Insurance Institute (CII) Certificate and Diploma exams. These exams are vital for working in the Insurance Industry as they help you progress through your career and help you gain familiarity with the industry and understand additional products outside of my specific role.

Initially I was not sure whether to get a job or go to university until my school recommended, we did a week’s work experience in Year 12. I have a family member in the Insurance Industry so was persuaded to spend the week there. I really enjoyed the week learning about the Insurance Industry and visiting Lloyd’s of London. As a result I decided to try and get an apprenticeship after I finished Sixth Form. I also disliked the idea of long lectures at university and wanted to earn my qualifications but also work at the same time therefore an apprenticeship suited me best.

Throughout the first year we have been given allocated time to revise for our exams and complete training with our Apprenticeship Manager who guided us through the first exam. The structure has helped us keep on top of our revision and progress through our Certificate Qualification in good time. We are keen to get our three exams done to gain our Certificate in Insurance within the next few months and move onto the Diploma at the end of summer. We have also been given exposure to writing essays and blogs about the Insurance Industry and some of the products we offer at Clegg Gifford. Some of these blogs have made it onto the website and they have helped us broaden our knowledge.

Over the next two years I would like to qualify to Diploma level and be start my Advanced Diploma in Insurance (ACII). I would also like to be exposed to more areas of the business, I am keen on learning about Marine and Liability Insurances to extend my knowledge and gain experience in additional classes of business. I believe this is a great place to progress due to the level of experience and support around me and the willingness of the business to succeed.

If you would like to follow my progress through the CII and Clegg Gifford, please connect with me on LinkedIn!
